In the realm of leadership and management, the balance between confidence and humility is delicate. Too often, individuals in positions of significant power find themselves tipping this scale toward an excessive self-confidence, which can evolve into a condition known as Hubris Syndrome. This syndrome, not just a fleeting state but rather a distinct neuropsychiatric disorder, manifests itself particularly among leaders who have held power for extended periods.

Understanding Hubris Syndrome

Derived from the Greek word ‘hybris’, meaning extreme pride or self-confidence, Hubris Syndrome transcends mere arrogance. It is distinguished by a pattern of behavior that demonstrates a pervasive lack of empathy, a propensity for acting in ways that serve one’s ego over the common good, and a distorted sense of omnipotence and invulnerability.

Key Symptoms of Hubris Syndrome Include:

  • A narcissistic propensity to see the world primarily as an arena in which to exercise power and seek glory, rather than as a place with opportunities to serve and create value.
  • An exaggerated self-belief and overconfidence in one’s own judgment and capabilities, often beyond evidence-based reasoning.
